Honor your father and mother. Matthew 15:4
Praise God! God has planned everything in our life even before we were formed. He chose our parents and gave us to them to raise a Godly generation. We love our parents, our mother bore us and gave birth to us with pain. Our father held us on the shoulders and satisfied all our needs. They left all their wishes and interests to give us the best in our life. In each and every stage of our life, they are there to support, encourage, guide and lead us in the right path. They love us with all their heart, I read a quote recently which said, “Love your parents. We are so busy growing up, we often forget they are also growing old.” Yeah, its true. Proverbs 6:20-22 says, “My son, keep your father’s commands and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck. When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.”
Our parents know the best for us, we should give heed to our parents’ words and obey them. 1Samuel 15:22 says, “To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” Some instructions may seem to be difficult at that time but when we think about that during the later stages of our life, we will not regret for having obeyed them. Do not speak negative things about the parents in public rather uplift their positive characteristics in all situations. The small children obey their parents and elders, when they grow up some tend to move more towards the world. The pleasures of the world attracts and pulls them into the fantasy which is not real but temporary. The world and its friends may try to distract and take them away from God but when they keep God as their first priority they will not be shaken, Ecclesiastes 12:1 says, Remember your Creator in the days of your youth. Let our lives be pleasing to God and not men, the earthly life is for few years but our Heavenly home is permanent.
It is the responsibility of the children to take care of their parents when they become old. Just remember the days when they cared for us more than themselves and be thankful for what they have done. Matthew 15:4 says, For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ Some think that the technology has grown and they know much more than their parents, yeah the children of this generation may be more intelligent and have much knowledge but the wisdom and the experience of our parents stands higher than anything else. Ephesians 6:1-3 says, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” – which is the first commandment with a promise – “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Some people do not understand or acknowledge their parents love when they are near them but when they move to a different place for studies or work, they miss them a lot and regret for not considering them. Time is too short and the world is too busy with all its activities, we should always share our love with our parents, brothers and sisters.
After a person is married, they should leave their father and mother and be united which their wife/husband. As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one.” Ephesians 5:31. Psalm 45:10, 11 says, “Listen, O daughter, consider and give ear: Forget your people and your father’s house. The king is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord.” This does not mean to forget the parents totally but to give them the honor and respect and the main thing is the husband and wife have become a new family and they should take all the decisions together regarding their family and do according to the will of God. Parents can give suggestions but that need not be the final one. The husband/wife should love and honor their parents and in-laws and support them when they are in need.
God must be our first priority, we should love Him more than any other person or things. Matthew 10:37 says, “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” When we love God, we will love our parents and others. In some of the families whose parents do not know God, pray for their salvation. God will surely work in their lives and bring them towards Him. God is good all the time! Let us be thankful to God for giving us a wonderful family! God bless you!
