Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person. Colossians 4:6
When we prepare food we just add the correct amount of salt because food is tasteless without salt. We dont add large quantities of salt just to show off but add only according to the taste that we need. Our words should be full of grace, In Proverbs we read that gentle answer turns away wrath and gentle words are a tree of life. Quality of the words matters the most rather than quantity.
James shows us few examples in chapter 3, a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire and ships are very large and are driven by strong winds but they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. He compares the tiny spark and the rudder to the tongue which is a small part of the body but boasts of great things and corrupts the entire life.
We should ask God for wisdom on how to answer everyone. Sometimes we tend to say something and then realize that we should not have answered so. James 1:19 says Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. We should bless, encourage and build each other up with our words.
